Thoughts on Handwashing for the Flats Challenge – How am I doing? #Flatschallenge

I’m participating in the Flats and Handwashing Challenge hosted by Dirty Diaper Laundry.

Ok, it’s official.  The big thing I have learned from the Flats Challenge is that I hate hand washing.  I really enjoyed it in the beginning.  To make my life a little easier, I have been using a wet pail when I couldn’t wash them right away.  Not that it works for everyone, but it worked for me.  I have honestly just been trying to wash as we go.  But in case you were wondering, here’s how it goes for me:

  1. Throw flats and covers in pail.  I try to unfold them at this point so I don’t have to do it later.  *Note: I don’t wash covers every  single time because I am changing him so much more often with the flats that the covers aren’t really wet.  BUT I do wipe them out, and the get washed usually after the second use.  Honestly, I haven’t used many covers unless we were leaving the house anyway or if he was napping.  (In the beginning I was just using my hands and a make shift wash board to do it.  That got old quick so, I use a plunger to agitate the diapers in the pail.  I do this for a few minutes, feels like an eternity.)
  2. Dump water out.  Since I’m doing this in the tub I just dump it there.
  3. Add hot water and a dash of soap.
  4. Agitate again…
  5. Dump water, again…
  6. Fill with cold water.
  7. Guess what?  Agitate again, and then you dump.  Do this until there are no bubbles from the soap.  This is why you only use a little soap, unless you want to be here all day rinsing.  (Learned that the hard way)
  8. Wring out your diapers.
  9. Hang them.  I’m lucky, I have a line outside and they dry really quick in Florida.

So what do you think of the handwashing so far?
